What is the best treatment for a Verruca – Reading?

WHAT IS A VERRUCA?

A verruca, or wart, is a virus that lies between the layers of your skin. At best they are inconvenient but they can become very painful and will often spread as they are highly contagious.

SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:-

  • Little black sports under hard skin on the feet or around the toe area
  • Can be painful – like standing on a needle
  • Can also be itchy and may bleed if scratched
  • They can be singular spots or appear in clusters

WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT VERRUCAE?

There are number of over the counter products that can help to remove a verruca. Please remember that verrucas are highly infectious and you should take precautions to avoid spreading them to other people. If you have a persistent verruca then you should consult a podiatrist who will be able to offer alternative treatments.

What is the SWIFT treatment for Verrucae (Warts)?

SWIFT is a new technology that uses microwave energy delivered into the skin through a special probe applied to the skin to activate the body’s immune system to destroy the Verruca virus.

Does it hurt?

Like some treatments for warts, there is some discomfort involved. Before treatment your podiatrist may decide to reduce the wart with a blade. This is generally painless, although when treated in this way, warts may bleed. Pain levels vary from person to person but most people undergoing SWIFT® say that it feels like the discomfort from an injection or sharp needle, lasting two seconds then quickly subsiding. In some cases there may be a little soreness for a few hours after treatment. This is unlikely to have any impact on your daily activities. in the rare circumstances when the pain lasts for more than a day painkillers can be used.

What can I do after treatment?

The treatment takes a few seconds and following this you may need a small dressing on but do not need to take any particular precautions after treatment. Warts may darken, develop a small blood blister or have more dark spots appear in the days following treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

This is dependent on how your wart responds to treatment. In most cases, you will need more than one treatment (normally about a month apart). If after three treatments your wart remains, you may be advised to discontinue treatment and switch to an alternative treatment. Our podiatrist will be able to discuss this with you.

Will it get rid of my wart?

Swift is one of the most effective treatments for warts and verrucae which are notoriously difficult to get rid of in adults. But no treatment can be guaranteed 100% successful and it cannot be guaranteed that SWIFT® (or any other treatment will work for every patient). Of course, the treatment may reduce the lesion size or the level of pain you were feeling before the treatment from the wart.

Can anyone receive this treatment?

Most people with warts on their feet would be able to have this treatment with a few exceptions. Your podiatrist will carry out an assessment prior to treatment and be able to advise you on this.
