Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.

To an osteopath, for your body to work well, its structure must also work well. We work to restore your body to a state of balance, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery. As osteopaths we use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints and to relieve muscle tension. This may also enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and help your body’s own healing mechanisms. We may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

We are based near Reading and assess and treat people of any age from the elderly to the newborn and from pregnant women to sports people.

Intervertebral Differential Dynamics (IDD) Therapy is a rapidly growing treatment designed to treat “slipped” or prolapsed discs. IDD is a safe, non-invasive and targeted treatment which can provide relief from the pain and stiffness associated with disc problems and sciatica. Theale Wellbeing Centre, near Reading, has been providing IDD Therapy since 2014.

IDD Therapy allows us to decompress the injured intervertebral disc, improve mobility and relieve pain.

Often a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan will show a problem at a specific level in the spine. With IDD Therapy we use computer-controlled pulling forces using the SDS SPINA machine to gently draw apart (distract) the segments identified by the MRI scan. This has the effect of reducing the pressure on the disc and nerve at that level.

The treatment also stretches muscles and ligaments. This can reduce stiffness which improves mobility.

By reducing the pressure on the injured or bulging disc, the treatment can help the natural healing mechanisms within the body act more efficiently.

The main aims of treating a “slipped” or bulging disc in this way are to reduce pain and muscle spasm and take the pressure off any affected nerves.

Why choose IDD Therapy?

  • Current treatment is not working
  • Want to stop taking painkillers
  • Seeking long-term pain relief
  • Want to return to normal daily activities

Typical candidates for IDD Therapy are people who have back or neck pain and may have tried various other treatments without success. They may be taking pain medication and may be considering invasive treatments such as injections or in extreme cases, surgery.

Here is a link to a video detailing more information and a short demo of this very effective therapy.

There are occasions when despite your best efforts nail surgery is required to give a permanent solution to the painful and potentially dangerous condition of an ingrowing toenail. At the Theale Wellbeing Centre we treat ingrowing toenails as an emergency due to the potential for pain and infection and will try to get you seen in the clinic as soon as possible. We can normally offer surgery within one month of the initial consultation.

An ingrowing toenail is one that has put so much pressure on the edge of the toe, often due to its  curved shape, that the nail has broken the surface of the skin. Minor nail surgery consists of the permanent removal of the problematic side or sides under local anaesthetic.

While the two injections to the base of the toe may be slightly uncomfortable the procedure itself is painless. Any discomfort after the procedure can be managed with paracetamol although this is not always necessary.

The toe usually needs to be dressed for about a month following surgery but a couple of days off work is usually enough to give the healing process enough of a start. Sometimes recreational activities need to be postponed during healing e.g. sport but otherwise activities can be recommenced soon after the procedure.

When we carry out this procedure at the Theale Wellbeing Centre we always discuss the options with you so that you can make an informed decision. If you have been suffering with a painful toenail which you think may be ingrowing please call us and make an appointment to see one of our podiatrists.

Nail surgery is normally carried out on Tuesday evenings with Lloyd Clark-Morris or Fridays with Edd Henstridge.

We recently filmed a procedureplease note this video is age restricted and does contact a surgical procedure
