What is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a scanning method so safe it is used in pregnancy to view the baby. We can also use it for a wide variety of medical purposes to investigate painful or damaged structures in the body. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce accurate images of various parts of the body. This could include joints, and soft tissues such as ligaments, tendons, nerves and fascia.

At Theale Wellbeing Centre we use ultrasound to help us identify and treat conditions such as:-

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Ligament damage
  • Foot Bursitis

Using ultrasound to guide Injection therapy

As part of your treatment you may be given the option of injection therapy. Ultrasound allows us to image where we are injecting ensuring an accurate administration of the medicines to the location that is causing pain. At Theale Wellbeing Centre we have a Specialist Podiatrist, Edward Henstridge, who is a CASE accredited ultrasonographer and is highly experienced with injection therapy.

Cortisone/Corticosteroid (steroids) injections can used to treat a variety of conditions although they are not the only option available. They relieve pain and inflammation. If you are suffering from a painful foot or ankle condition that other treatments have not helped, then injection therapy may be an option. We will take time and use local anaesthetic to ensure you are as comfortable as you can be during your treatment.

Some frequently asked questions:

What should you expect during an assessment?

Once you are in the therapy room you will be asked about you and the condition causing you pain. The area will then need to be examined so you should be prepared to remove your shoes and socks.

We will use ultrasound to assist us in our clinic examination. Some water-based gel will be applied to the area needing to be looked at and we will then move the probe/transducer over the painful area looking for any signs of injury or damage. This process takes around 15 – 20 minutes of the assessment and should not be uncomfortable.

Reflexology is a Complementary Therapy that works on the feet allowing the body to heal itself. Following illness, stress, injury or disease, it is in a state of “imbalance”, and vital energy pathways are blocked, preventing the body from functioning effectively. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body’s natural balance and encourage healing.

A Reflexologist uses their hands to apply pressure to the feet. The therapist’s hands can detect imbalances in the feet, and by working on these points the Reflexologist can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy to the whole body. Tensions are eased, and circulation and elimination may be improved.

Reflexologists do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe.

Verrutop is relatively new, however,  the ingredients of Verrutop, such as Nitric acid, copper and zinc, are not new to the treatment of Verrucas at all but, in fact, have been used for many years.

The treatment is very safe, generally painless and can even be used on children as young as 6 years old. It involves the application of a solution to the surface of the Verruca while in clinic. There is no need for any injections or pain relief.

Usually approximately 4 treatments are necessary, spaced fortnightly although up to 6 treatments can be given. At this early stage we cannot comment specifically on how effective this treatment is but early evidence is very promising.

If you would like more information on this treatment, please contact the Theale Wellbeing Centre and we will arrange one of our podiatrists who specialises in verruca treatment to contact you.

Some frequently asked questions:

Does it hurt?

There may be some minor discomfort like many many treatments for skin lesions. Prior to treatment your podiatrist may decide to reduce the lesion with a blade. Pain levels vary from person to person but as mentioned above patients liken it to a pain similar to an injection or a scratch, lasting 2 – 3 seconds then quickly subsiding. After the treatment the area may feel sore but it will not prevent you doing your normal activities.

What is Verrutop®?

Verrutop is relatively new using ingredients such as Nitric acid, copper and zinc, that are not new to the treatment of Verrucas at all but, in fact, have been used for many years.

Can anyone receive this treatment?

Prior to treatment your podiatrist will carry out an assessment. With a few exceptions, most people with verrucas would be able to have this treatment. Verrutop can be used on children as young as 6.

How many treatments will I need?

Usually approximately 4 treatments are necessary, spaced fortnightly although up to 6 treatments can be given. At this early stage we cannot comment specifically on how effective this treatment is but early evidence is very promising.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a tried and tested system of complementary medicine. The Chinese and other eastern cultures have been using acupuncture to restore, promote and maintain good health for thousands of years. In China it is used in mainstream health care, both as a standalone therapy and in combination with conventional western medicine.According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body’s motivating energy moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of channels beneath the skin. This energy is known as Qi.

How does it work?

Acupuncture uses fine single use sterile needles to connect with the energy or Qi of the body via a system of pathways known as meridians. The intention is to restore the natural healthy balance of the body and to promote healing.

Which conditions can Acupuncture help with?

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Back problems
  • Sciatica
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Hayfever
  • Joint pain

The Mézières Method was created in 1947 by a French Physiotherapist Françoise Mézières. The Mezieres Method treats the person from a global perspective and it is designed to find out in the general imbalance of our whole musculature the contracted or retracted muscles and to work their pathological expressions.

Through stretching the retracted muscle chains, removing respiratory compensations and improving body awareness the treatments aims to restore the global mobility and function. It always requires the active participation of the patient.

Why choose Mezieres Method?

Anyone with back pain can find relief with this treatment. However, the most common conditions treated are:

  • Chronic muscular fatigue of lower/upper back and neck.
  • Disc injuries: annular strain, disc prolapse, herniation.
  • Consequences of developmental scoliosis
  • Hyperlordosisand hyperkyphosis of the spine.

Around 1 in 4 pregnant women in the UK has a caesarian birth, without addressing the resulting scar with soft tissue techniques, dysfunction can occur.  Scar tissue can bind to local organs and tissues, causing that pulling feeling that some women can experience around the site of the scar.  It can also result in scar pain, back pain, pelvic organ dysfunction, poor sensation/numbness around the scar and a feeling of restriction as the wound heals and soft tissues are drawn in, affecting the body as a whole.  This is also the case for hysterectomy and any abdominal surgery.

Scar therapy is a treatment that combines massage and soft tissue release techniques to correct your breathing pattern and break down the adhesions that build up around your scar.  This is so important to allow your body to move freely, without restriction and to help you to reconnect with your core and heal post birth.

It doesn’t matter if you had your baby 6 weeks or 20 years ago, it is never too late to make change, to improve the changes that occurred to your body during pregnancy, after birth or abdominal surgery.

Cranial Osteopathy is a subtle type of osteopathic treatment that uses very gentle manipulative pressure to encourage changes throughout the body, as well as the head. We treat the whole body not just the head.

We use our highly trained palpatory skills to detect areas of tension or restriction in the body, and gently release them to restore a state of balance within the musculoskeletal system of the body.

Because the techniques are so gentle Cranial Osteopathy can be used on everyone, from newborns to the elderly.

Frequently patients comment on how much change can be effected so gently, and report improvements in general health and well-being as well as relief from their original symptoms.
